Working with Nudes

Photographing nudes is much more complex than just photographing people without their clothes on. The photographer must pay close attention to detail. Things which you can get away with in regular portraits become intense and glaring errors when shooting nudes. Three things to be aware of when working with nudes are reflections, poses and facial expressions.

How to Sell Your Photos

Portraits style= and assignments may be the bread and butter of a majority of photographers, but that doesn't mean that selling your photos can't be a profitable sideline or even a main source of income. It just takes a bit of creativity, business savvy and persistence to be successful in selling photos that you already have on hand or that aren't part of an assignment. The key is knowing your customer and targeting your sales based on the type of photos you have taken.

CANON EOS 40D DIGITAL SLR REVIEW

The Canon EOS 40D, launched in September 2007, has received high reviews and was named best semi-pro digital SLR by consumers. While this 10-megapixel Canon digital SLR camera costs more than some of the others, you do get a lot for your money. Some of the things you are getting is a heavier, sturdier, magnesium camera body with better water resistance and 6.5 frames-per-second shooting for tracking action (twice as fast as the less expensive Canon Rebel XSi). You also get Live View, a great improvement since it's first appearance on the 1D Mark III, and a built-in sensor cleaner.

EOS-1Ds Mark III DIGITAL CAMERA REVIEWEOS-1Ds Mark III DIGITAL CAMERA REVIEW

While most serious photographers don't need more than 8 to 12 megapixels, there is a set of pro photographers who need every last bit of detail a camera can give them. There is no question that the Canon EOS -1Ds produces the best high quality images on the market. The question is, do you want to pay $8000 and lug this beast around with you?

Long hailed by many as a rival to medium-format digital cameras for less money, the 1Ds is extremely popular in the professional portrait and fashion photography world. With the addition of nearly all the advancements and interfaces improvements of its higher-speed brother, the 1D Mark III, the 1Ds Mark III is likely to be even more popular with high-end pro photographers. The Mark III has down come in weight from a 3.5 lb anvil to a 3 lb dumbbell and has a resolution of 21 megapixels, producing superb 20x30 enlargements and acceptable 30x40 prints.

NIKON D300 DIGITAL

The D300 is a lensman's ideal photographic camera. There are no setting modalities, not even a Green Auto mode for the photographic camera to do the exercise for you. The D300 is a master grade digital SLR bundled with fresh, radically new characteristics. Nikon has inaugurated the full-frame sensing element, called FX. It shoots six-frames-per-second with the power to promote to eight-frames-per-second with the purchase of an electric battery handgrip. It has the fresh aspect identification scheme which blends information from the 51-point AF system of rules with information from the 1,005-point metering system of rules for more zealous accuracy and better tracking. It also has Live perspective, in-camera Lateral Chromatic optical aberration Correction, a self-cleaning sensing element, and optic-by-optic autofocus tweaking.

HOW TO SET WHITE BALANCE

Different light sources cast different colors on people and objects. We may not notice it with our eyes but the camera does. Without any alteration to the white balance (WB), the color palette of your images will be way off – and not in a cool, funky way. Incandescent lights have an orange tint to them and fluorescents are greenish, whereas daylight and strobes are the cleanest. You want to set the WB so that things which are white actually come out white in the photograph, regardless of the light source. In order to set the proper white balance, you need to have an understanding of color temperature.

HOW TO READ A HISTOGRAM

Before you can read a histogram, you first need to understand what one is. A histogram is an exposure graph. It has nothing to do with white balance, focus, composition, or image quality. The pixels from the image are looked at individually and mapped out on a graph according to their density (the amount of information recorded) from darkest to lightest. This instantly tells you if your image is correctly exposed, and nothing more.

Cheap Memory Cards

I would just like to share an experience I have had using cheap memory cards. I currently own a Nikon D200 and a Nikon D300 that use CF memory cards. Since I first bought them, I have been using either a Sandisk or Lexar in either the 2 Gig or 4 Gig versions. Well, a few weeks ago I saw an ad in the paper for a Kingston 4 Gig for like 14 bucks, at Frys Electronics. I thought what the heck I will buy one and if it does not work out , I have only wasted 14 bucks. I also thought since it was a Kingston it had to be good, I mean after all Kingston makes great RAM, so how could I go wrong?

iGeneration

What is the iGeneration? Wait I have to say I have coined this name and if you use it just give me some props.

Well, first let me explain, before I explain, I am in no way trying to offend anyone, I am simple going to explain a concept presented from someone who perhaps bridges the gap. Or maybe I cannot bridge the gap at all.

First I take you back to a time when life was simple, well maybe at the time we did not think so, but now looking back it indeed was. This was a time when people wore bell bottomed jeans, granted they still do but you certainly would not be caught dead in a pair unless it were purchased for an "in" name brand. In those days it was pretty much Levis and that was about it, maybe wranglers but those were for goat ropers as well used to call the drug store cowboy types back in Denver. Anyway back to the 70's if you haven't guessed. Yes, I am an old guy, but you know what? I totally relish that. There was a time I hated getting older, but now I realize that are some definite benefits to it, older, wiser, you know , all that BULL Sheet.

Out of Photography

Well, here is the story, Photography was my passion, when I was in high school, however; it was a passion that did not pay the bills. I remember spending countless hours in the lab at school hangin with friends developing pictures what a blast that was. Photography did lead me to a job at a photo lab(remember those?) and it was not a bad job, I mean I made some decent coin for a 21 year old dude, but I worked like 80 hours a week, so in reality salary was not worth it , I think it worked out to like minimum wage or something. The best part of that job was training people in the dark! We used an infrared scope and it was soooo funny to see people in the dark with their eyes wide open, trying to find things in a pitch black room. We did have a guy who was bind that all he did was crack open film canisters and put them on a giant reel to be developed. His name was Mario, and he was cool since he could tell who he was speaking to just by smelling their cologne or deodorant. The other very interesting part was seeing all the pictures people had shot come through, as you can imagine there were so crazy sheet that came through. The Sheriff's office used to send stuff through, and we saw cops burning piles and piles of weed, and the occasional dead person. Of course the homemade porn was always interesting, since most people think no one ever sees that stuff, what they don't know is, there was one maintenance man who would keep copies and had stacks, and stacks of homemade porn. Wonder where all the stuff is today? Probably scanned and found its way onto the Internet!

Tattoo Flake

About two months ago I put up a casting call for a tattoo shoot, and had a model respond, (yes she is on MM) we exchanged emails, and she actually had a tattoo artist in mind, and I said sure no problem, whatever you want to do after all it is a tattoo and those are not erasable. Anyway we confirm with the tattoo artist, and get the week before and I leave her voice mails, and emails because the tat artist wanted to meet prior to the tat so that he could redraw or do anything he had to do with the artwork. Well, this model stopped responding and never returned my calls, so I wrote her off, and sent her a polite email telling her how unprofessional that was , but I am sure it was not heeded. Really I have had so many flake it doesn't even phase me anymore.

While each photographer and model have different perceptions of what exactly this is. It is essentially an agreement between the model and the photographer to exchange services for some equal trade. This reason I write about this is lately I have had some models debate this with me.

The sound of color

About 10 years ago someone told me I had a hearing problem, I said "what?" had to put that one in. The hearing loss is about 90% of in my right ear. The person who called my attention to it, was wondering why I was not responding to them when they were speaking to me, unless they were on my left side of my body. This person was someone I worked with at Motorola, she actually thought I as ignoring here. My wife as well, always thought I was just ignoring her too. I went to a doctor and had a hearing check, and indeed I had lost a great majority of a hearing in the left ear. The loss pertains to certain levels of sounds so that rules out a hearing aid, since that would only amplify the sounds that I do hear, and I can tell you everything sounds like Mickey Mouse is talking, so you can only imagine how annoying that is, so I would rather just be without. There is a hearing aid that acts like a transmitted in one ear, then the other ear is the receiver, but think about that. A hearing aid like that would cause me to think sounds are coming from one side of me , when in reality they are coming from the opposite side, that in my mind would be truly upsetting, and could actually be a little dangerous. The transmit/receive hearing aid is also about eight thousand dollars, yikes!

Working for Free

The other day I got the message below from a model I shot with, and thought it would be interesting to share, since I am sure many other photographers run into this from time to time. I took the names out since I don't want anyone to get a bad rap. This is a great thread since it demonstrates what some folks mindsets are. While I really do enjoy shooting TFCD and helping models get going, I think many of them don't realize or forget I am at this to actually make a living, and have invested a tremendous amount of work, and funds into it. Funny thing about this email thread, or perhaps not so funny, is I never heard back from her, so I don't know if she is mad or what.
Anyway, I hope all that read this find it useful, I would be interested to get some comments for experiences others have had.

So for this blog I want to outline the use of documents, and how doing this task will make your life so much easier, in particular if you are planning on selling or displaying any images. By the way if I do sell the images I usally work out some compensation share with the model, that would be a separate agreement.

Most people think is is the fear of germs, and while that is one element , OCD can manifest if in different ways with different people. My manifestation is once I get a concept or even something to worry about, it sticks in my head, and I run though it over and over. It is like I can never turn my brain off. You might say,hey that is great your brain is always working, but I will tell you it is an affliction that will make you brand new, and not in a good way.

Mortgage Dilemma

To Whom it may concern,

How do I start this email/blog, I really don’t know due to all the frustration I feel right now. I guess I will start by saying, about 3 years ago we sold our old house and purchased the current one we are in. We like many, many other people got an ARM. I was well aware of the ARM requirements, however; I planned in short order to get the loan refinanced into a 30 year fixed . In my wildest dreams I never would have thought things would have played out the way they have.

First I tried to refinance both and was told due to the market conditions , my home had dropped so much in value my LTV was no longer conducive to a refinance, not to mention even if I did refinance Beneficial had a prepay penalty of about 10,000.00, so I decided to wait a while longer. By the way when we purchased this home it appraised at 425,000.00 we purchased it for 369,000.00 . We just got the house appraised, (which is a whole other issue I will address later ) it appraised at 315,000.00 despite having a brand new A/C unit that cost 11,000.00 new carpet, new paint, the entire house has essentially been completely upgraded. What I find hard to understand is how I read in the paper homes have dropped about 10% in my area, which by my math should be about 42500.00 which would put the house value at 382,500.00 . With the amount os the current appraisal , that would put the total amount of decline at around 30%

The dog died in the gallery. He calls himself an artist. I call him an animal abuser.)

Diversity

I recently had a model on one of the modeling sites I am a member of , comment on my work. She was impressed with the diversity in my portfolio. i take that to mean , the people I shoot, being of whatever background. While that is a nice compliment, it is really hard for me to understand. I mean, I was actually trying to explain this to a friend the other day, and I don't even think he understood where I was coming from.

Here's the deal, although I am a white dude from Denver(which just so you know, I never use that term to describe myself, i am more of a Broncos fan) I find it very hard to understand Diversity, my mom came from Tennessee, so you can imagine what her perspective is, while she is not a racist she for sure is s separatist, which really if you think about it, goes way back to the 50's or something. So she basically believes that people who are of color should date their within their own race, and go to their own schools etc.

NAMING FILES

With film you could get away with being disorganized, of having that just-throw-them-in-the-shoebox attitude. When you needed to find an image you could just pull down the overflowing shoebox from the closet shelf and sift through the images until you found what you were looking for. This is not the case with digital photographs. In fact, if you have continued this practice of throwing your images into your digital shoebox, I call you to repentance. You penance, however, is not as simple as saying ten Hale Mary's and an hour of community service. You have some work do. But you'll thank me in the end (yes, Mother). When it comes down to it, there are really only two things you need to worry about when managing your digital images: editing and organization.

Because photography literally means drawing with light, having an understanding of how light enters the camera is paramount. You cannot develop your photography skills nor your image quality without understanding exposure. If you don't, you're just guessing.

Exposure is how much light reaches the film (or CCD but I will use film interchangeably). “Correct” exposure is when the film has received the right amount of light, producing an image with correct colors and tones.

BACKING UP YOUR FILES

I'm sitting at the coffee shop on a Sunday morning in a leather manhattan chair. My soy latte is cooling on the end table to my left. The Shins are playing in the background as I wave to a friend who just walked in the door. I'm working in PhotoShop, removing a few pieces of lint from the model's black blazer when my mouse freezes. I can't force quit. I can't ctrl+alt+del. I hold down the power button to shut off the machine. I wait 15 seconds and turn it back on. It seems to be booting up just fine. Then, the blue screen of death appears. I'm not too worried. I reboot. Blue screen. I reboot. Blue screen. I'm sweating now. I have 6 photo shoots on there which have not been delivered to the client. I don't have a backup of my contacts. I have dozens of emails which have vital information from my job search. I haven't backed up for months.

LOW LIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

Low light and night photography is rather tricky. It requires unique settings not available in the pre-programmed settings on most cameras, therefore, it's best to have a camera where you can shoot in full manual mode.

Some Tips on the Use of Filters in the Photographic Process
by
William Lulow

Filters are sometimes handy things to have around in your camera bag. They are usually used to enhance how film or digital media "see" a scene. In order to understand this a bit more fully, it is necessary to talk a bit about the difference between the human eye and various types of media (film, digital sensors, emulsions, etc.).

Working with Flash

Flash, also known as electronic flash or strobe is a type of light that is produced when an electric current interacts with a gas to produce a short, but intense burst of light. Most of us are familiar with a point-and-shoot camera’s electronic flash because it is built in to the camera. We are familiar with the flash going off and temporarily blinding us while the photo is taken. There are some things about this type of light that are important for serious photographers, be they amateurs or professionals, to keep in mind.

Digtial Camera Tips Part 1

Pre-production is the term professional photographersir use for the time spent in preparation before a shoot. Whether that be a day or a month, the more prepared you are for the shoot, the better your chances of it being successful. Pre-production is more than a simple checklist of items to put into your camera bag. It is also entails research and brainstorming, but that's a different topic altogether. For now, let's just focus on techniques rather than concepts.

Digtial Camera Tips Part 2

Now that you're more comfortable understanding the controls and functions of your digital camera (having read the manual and prepared yourself for the photo shoot) you can now focus on the production, or photo shoot.

Digital camerasir differ from film in that you now have to tell the camera what type of “film” you are using. Are you shooting outside? Are you in a low-light situation? What is the light source? These were decisions you made with your selection of film, whether you knew it or not. Now you have to answer all of these questions and tell the camera what settings to use. Cameras are smart but not infallible. Automatic mode does not always work. You need to have an understanding of film speed, light source, and color balance in order to get the most out of your digital camera.

Digital Camera Tips Part 3

The final stage in the digital imaging process is post-production, the stuff that happens after the photo shoot. This entails editing, touch-up, and storage of all these precious images.

EDIT, EDIT, EDIT

If location, location, location are the three rules of real estate, then edit, edit, edit are the three rules of post-production. You don't not have to save and print every picture you take. You must go through your images with a sharp, critical eye. This becomes an even more important issue when you invite friends over for a slide show. Honey, no one wants to sit through 1,000 images of your family vacation to Disneyland, no matter how cute your kids are.

Digtial Photography Secrets

With all of the photo editing software out there, people readily assume that any problem – from poor exposure to bad composition – can be fixed later in Photoshop. This mindset is the downfall of many photographers and amateurs alike. You have to have a good image to start with before you turn it into a great image later in Photoshop. (When I say Photoshop I really mean any photo editing software. Photoshop is the industry standard and has become a universal term, such as kleenex or xerox.) The secret to digital photography is to do as much adjusting and tweaking in the camera, as opposed to on the computer, as possible.

Studio Lighting Techniques

From the Greek word phos meaning “light” and graphis meaning “stylus” or “paintbrush,” photography literally means drawing with light. Photography is nothing more than the recording of light. The more you understand lighting and lighting techniques, the easier it is to manipulate light to get the effect you want.

Shooting Still Lifes

The first thing to keep in mind when shooting a still life is “What do I want to show in the image?” If it is a product shot, you need to set up the product so that it will be immediately recognizable and stand out from its surroundings. Most photographers usually begin with a simple background such as a plain piece of no-seam paper or a piece of fabric that can be placed on a tabletop. Larger items may sometimes be shot on the floor but you need to have enough space to make a pleasing set-up and then to arrange your lighting.
